In recent years there has been increasing focus on treating clients who suffer from the dual disorders of psychiatric illness and substance abuse or dependence. While traditional methods of treatment for psychiatric or addictive disorders have helped numerous clients, many have not experienced the full potential benefits of treatment because the focus was primarily on one disorder, either the psychiatric illness or the addiction. This singular approach is not adequate for many dual diagnosis clients who come to treatment with a multiplicity of problems caused or worsened by either or both of their disorders.

This newly revised and updated counseling manual was written to provide a framework for mental health and chemical dependency counselors who take care of dual diagnosis clients day in and day out. It is intended to be a “practical” manual that can be adapted to current counseling practices.
